DS Advocate's mission is to help parents know they
are equal partners during their child's Individual Education Plan meetings and to conduct themselves in a professional manner
during those sometimes intimidating IEP meetings.
Do you feel like you don't know what is
really going at your child's IEP meeting and that many in attendance are talking over your head or talking way too fast for
you to really understand what is going on? Do you lack the confidence and knowledge to feel like you may have any real
say so at these meetings? All those forms and things to sign...want to understand and know what you are signing?
Our goal is
to teach parents so they understand the whole Special Education process when writing up annual individual education plan goals
for their child.
DS Advocates
know and understand the process. DS Advocates are themselves parents of children with unique learning
abilities also! Experienced at all levels of Advocating for Federal, State and Local services and rights for
ALL children to receive a free public education. Our Advocates have a solid understanding of Federal IDEA2004 law, State Statutes
on Special Education and Local SP&P ~ Special Programs & Procedures, the NCLB~No Child Left Behind Act and Title 1
school programs.
DS Advocates
come with many years’ experiences in the fields of owning their own businesses, childcare & parenting, advocating
and leadership. DS Advocates are members of National, State and Local Special Ed. Advocacy Organizations. DS Advocates have year’s
experiences as Executive Directors of Down Syndrome Support Groups that alone brings many insights into the real needs
of children in their educational environment.
DS Advocates
understand the real issues and concerns for our children being educated and not just taught 'life skills' and social &
behavioral issues. Education and teaching solid academic skills is the backbone of the reason for offering our services
& trainings. Inclusion is the first option that should be considered, and at times is not even discussed as an option
by school districts. LRE ~ Least Restricted Environment is the Federal IDEA law, but is not always offered to families
for their child. It's these issues and concerns DS Advocates want to help families understand what the Federal &
State laws are and how to handle those 'somewhat' intimidating IEP ~ Individual Education Plan meetings.
